PROSTATIC ARTERY EMBOLIZATION
Prostatic enlargement or BEP is a very common problem in Elderly men.
Almost every man suffers from urinary symptoms because of an enlarged prostate. The prostate gland which lies at the neck of the urinary bladder obstructs the flow of urine if it gets enlarged. This results in increased frequency of urine and typically patients have to get up at night and pass urine. This can also result in stagnation of urine recurrent urinary tract infections and prostatic infections.
Traditional treatment of benign enlargement of the prostate has been through a transurethral resection which involves a surgical procedure. Recently prostatic artery embolization has gained a lot of popularity in the Western world and is increasingly being used in our country as well.
In this, a small catheter was introduced from the groin and an angiography of the prostate gland was performed. After that, the vascularity of the prostate gland is obliterated with embolic particles. This results in shrinkage of the prostatic gland significant improvement in the urinary stream and reduction in the urinary frequency. This can be done as a daycare procedure and does not need any hospitalization and does not need catheter placement in most cases. You can discuss about the procedure with your doctor.
